Broken Rails 03:24
Walking round the ghost town, with a restless heart How did I get stuck here, while others made it far? My mind is set on leaving this solitary place But the broken rails of this town lead nowhere And it seems like I'm not getting out of here, out of here My friends told me to leave here, my dad said I should stay It's safe for you to be here, where people know your name So I set out through the desert, I just had to leave this place Because the broken rails of this town lead nowhere Wanna be somebody that I can't be here, can't be here And many years went by, when I was looking for myself But didn't seem to find me in any other place I slowly started longing for the place I once called home But the broken rails of my life lead nowhere And it feels like I'm not getting anywhere, anywhere

Tiny Town 04:19
In a tiny town, lived a tiny man In his garden grew, nothing but his fears Took a lot of work, nourishing his thoughts Tending to his plants, he would always sing his song Oh why me? Why myself and I? Oh why me? Why myself and I? How will me, myself and I survive? How will we survive? Oh why, myself and I? No one cares, and they all just let me down When his world, took a sudden turn Feelings of despair, made him lose his mind He felt left aside, offended by them all Blaming everyone, while his plants got overgrown Oh why me? Why myself and I? Oh why me? Why myself and I? How will me, myself and I survive? How will we survive? Oh why, myself and I? No one cares, and they all just let me down If you always feel, that your life's unfair You will waste your time, you will waste your tears Think of the man, in the tiny town You will find no joy, if you're rooted to you fears Oh why me? Why myself and I? Oh why me? Why myself and I? How will me, myself and I survive? How will we survive? Oh why, myself and I? No one cares, and they all just let me down How will we survive? Oh why me? Why myself and I? How will me, myself and I survive? How will we survive? Oh why, myself and I? No one cares, why do people let me down?

Shadows Obey 02:39
It's five in the morning, I'm lying awake You're sound asleep beside me in the bed I want to wake you, I want you to sleep The sun's shining in and I just want to Howl like the wind, twirl like the storm I hear the rain beginning to pour It's making you stir, but I feel at ease A calmness that's making me fall asleep We're standing together just watching the rain The drops on the window wash darkness away You don't need to ask me, we don't need to talk A comforting silence brings light to the Dark and the grey, shadows obey Somehow I know I'll soon be okay 'cause after the clouds, storm and the rain It's easier to enjoy sunny days It's eight in the morning, still lying awake You're sound asleep beside me in the bed I want to wake you, I want you to sleep The sun's shining in and I just want to Howl like the wind, twirl like the storm I hear the rain beginning to pour It's making you stir, but I feel at ease A calmness that's making me fall asleep

about

Tailsway is a contemporary folk music project from Finland by Pernilla Bergman and Johan Nordström. Our music is influenced by an eclectic blend of musical genres, including our Scandinavian tradition, with a strong emphasis on our love for Celtic folk music. This is reflected in our debut album “Obsidian” which contains our original compositions.

Pernilla Bergman is a fiddle player, vocalist, composer and producer. Johan Nordström is a multi-instrumentalist, sound and recording engineer who plays bouzouki, keyboards and bass. Both are from Pargas, Finland.

We met through music in 2010. Shortly thereafter we started playing acoustic folk music together as a duo. The idea of creating our own unique sound was born as we began working on our album “Obsidian”.
We are proud to say that this debut album is performed, recorded and produced by the two of us.
We truly hope that you enjoy the music that we have created and we invite you to join us on our musical journey.

Pernilla & Johan

1. Autumn Winds / The Twister
This set of tunes were the first that we composed together in 2014. It was also the first set that we recorded and arranged, and it set the tone for the whole album. It started off with only fiddle, bouzouki and bass guitar. Then Pernilla got the idea of adding some Indian bells to it and that opened up the possibilities in our heads of making bigger arrangements and adding more instruments to all our tracks.

2. Broken Rails
The inspiration for this song came from an old computer game set in the Wild West that Pernilla played as a child. The point of the game was to try and get out of a small town where the train rails were broken. We changed the lyrics in the end but kept the Wild West feeling of the song.

3. Climb the Ladder / Tricky Horse / The Surfing Cricket
Climb the Ladder was an idea that began with Pernilla. The Tricky Horse and The Surfing Cricket we composed together. One of the working titles was “My Horse” simply because we couldn’t come up with anything better. The tune was also quite tricky, so it ended up with the title “Tricky Horse”. The Surfing Cricket was inspired by the groove of the famous band TOTO, which we are both big fans of.

4. Chrystal Ocean
We live in the south western archipelago of Finland and we love the sea and to go on boat trips. When you listen to this tune you can close your eyes and think of a crystal clear sea and a warm summer breeze with the sound of the ocean in the background.

5. Morrison’s Jig / Hurry Up / The Dancing Muffin
Morrison’s Jig is the only traditional tune that we have on the album. The arrangement is our own and has more of a reggae feel to it than people may be used to in a reel.
Hurry up is a reel by Pernilla. It has a surprise dance part that we added for fun, just as we thought we were finished with the production of the tune.
The Dancing Muffin was composed by Pernilla in 2009. The inspiration for the tune was the catastrophic result of her poor baking skills.

6. Tiny Town
Tiny Town is a tune about egoism and feelings of helplessness. It is easy to blame other people and the world for that matter for the things that happen to you. We can’t always change the external. Sometimes you need to turn inwards to see what you can change about yourself in order to find happiness.

7. Neverending Week / The Little Monkey
Neverending Week was composed by Pernilla after a couple of weeks spent in a hospital bed because of her chronic lung disease. Even one day at a hospital can feel like an eternity. So after a few weeks when she started feeling better she composed this tune.
The Little Monkey- is the most peculiar song of the album with it’s uneven time signature and weird arrangement. Somehow it ended up making us think of a jungle theme and named it “The Little Monkey” after a small plush toy orangutan.

8. Grazeland Waltz / Obsidian Edge
Pernilla composed Graceland Waltz one night after walking home to her first apartment. The apartment was tiny and she felt quite lonely. It was a perfect time for composing a slow sentimental waltz.
The original title of Obsidian Edge was actually Old Boy George. That’s a pretty weird title. It came from a dream that Pernilla had back in 2009. In the dream she was going to seek out a tin whistle guru going by the name Old Boy George. She was going to learn all about the secrets of tin whistle playing from him, but as she was on her way to see him she found out that he had been long dead. What a pity.

9. Shadows Obey
Shadows Obey is a song that is actually about insomnia. Not being able to sleep no matter how tired you are is really frustrating and makes it hard for you to function during the day. The sound of rain and storm is soothing and can sometimes help you fall asleep.

10. Waltz at the End of Summer
Even though the name suggests that this tune was written at the end of summer it isn’t true. It was in fact written in spring, but we thought that the feeling of it suits the shift from summer to fall perfectly.
